More and more people are turning to the web to find their next service provider whether it be administrative work, marketing, coaching or web design. They are looking for more value for their buck and that may mean using a virtual provider.

 

While there is no doubt that hiring a virtual professional can be the most cost effective, it's important to know what to expect when working with a virtual professional and also the most efficient way to work with one.

 

If you are a person who is not familiar with working with a virtual professional, there will be a slight learning curve but most virtual professionals are willing to help make the transition to virtual as painless as possible. There's email, fax, postal mail, IM, and phone.  Phone communication is by far the most efficient simply because communication strictly by email could be easily misinterpreted. The written word can deliver a completely different meaning than the vocalized word.  However, any discussion that you have via phone, make sure you also summarize it via email.  If you have it in writing then you always have a reference to fall back on, should the need arise.

Once you find a service provider that you feel may be a good fit, ask for references and make sure you call them.  References can be extremely helpful not only to find out how well they perform but also you can get an inclination as to the virtual professionals work  style and only then can you make a informed decision as to whether or not that provider is a good fit for you.

 

Don't choose a service provider based strictly on price. Base it on their ability. Somebody may charge $30 per hour and quote you three hours or somebody else may charge $40 per hour and have your project back to you in two hours. That's a savings of $10 and you receive your completed project back quicker.

 

Don't be afraid to speak up. If the provider completes a project and you aren't entirely happy with it, tell them. Offer them suggestions as to how to make it meet your expectations. This is another example of how communication is important. If you can not communicate your issues and concerns to your provider you end up unsatisfied and angry and looking for a different service provider while your service provider is left in the dark not knowing what the problem was.  However, when you do communicate your concerns to the virtual professional, do it politely. Don't be accusatory and don't belittle them. Do it professionally. Some people have a very hard time with constructive criticism but in order for your relationship with a virtual professional to be successful, you need to communicate and communicate well.

 

Be patient. Virtual professionals are small businesses owners just like yourself. They have other clients that also need their assistance. So, while they try to provide you with assistance as soon as possible, they may have other client work that comes ahead of yours.
